In 1967, clever Japanese engineers from baby lock, led by Koichi Sakuma, landed a coup: they developed the world’s first household overlock machine. Since then, the name baby lock has been synonymous with top quality, ease of use and professional sewing results. With ingenious innovations and technical refinements, baby lock has succeeded time and again in setting completely new standards in the world of hobby sewing.

Always staying true to this motto, Koichi Sakuma did pioneering work at and for baby lock for decades. By the time he retired in 2014, he had been awarded over 200 patents in Germany and abroad. He can be called the father of baby lock with a clear conscience, as he began manufacturing the wooden prototype of the first baby lock machine in 1956. He is also credited with inventions such as the automatic thread delivery (ATD) and the automatic looper threader.
baby lock machines are not only genuine manufactory products. baby lock is also a family business. So it is not surprising that today Toru Sakuma, son of the innovative baby lock inventor Koichi, is continuing the family tradition with a great deal of inventiveness. He was practically born with the talent. To this day, the philosophy that baby lock has pursued from the very beginning is maintained in its developments: The aim is craftsmanship that does not imitate, but remains creative and imaginative. In addition to the baby lock sewing machines Ovation, Gloria, Acclaim and Euphoria, Toru Sakuma is also largely responsible for the development of the Primo top cover stitch machine.
baby lock does not focus on quantity, but exclusively on quality! Production takes place in a factory in the north of Japan. The highest standards must be met before a machine sets off on its journey from Yamagata to delight its future owners. Each machine is thoroughly tested and adjusted. The sensitive hooks are polished by hand and 30 different seams are sewn. baby lock focuses – then as now – on long-lasting quality and special sewing comfort. This makes our products something very special!
