Sorted alphabetically, you will find terms relating to sewing or the baby lock machines briefly explained. A
This is the name given to the small parts and tools supplied with the machine.
The Jet Air System is the hook threading system on baby lock machines .By simply pressing a button or lever, air is propelled through the channels, which in turn moves the threads through these pathways.
This is a sash leg that prevents unwanted fabric cuts.
This is the name given to the automatic thread feed or thread take-up system; there are three sensors (stitch width sensor, stitch length sensor, thickness sensor).
B
This is a reinforcing stitch used on belt loops, pocket openings, zips and much more.
This device is designed for use on a cover stitch or combination machine. It folds strips of fabric or tape on both sides to create a strap or belt loop. It is secured to the machine with screws. Please be aware that the belt loop folder is not included in the delivery package.
It is also known as a sequin foot and is a special foot for sewing on beads, sequins, curtain weight tape, etc.
This tape is cut diagonally to the grain and serves as a binding tape.
This is a special stitch for edging woollen blankets or similar.
The blade cover protects the blade and your hands. For safety reasons, the machine is designed so that it does not sew when the blade cover is open.
The BLCS marks the first model in baby lock’s range of cover stitch machines.
This needle is a special curved needle for the blind hemming stitch machine.
This is an invisible stitch created using either a sewing or overlock machine. The blind hem stitch is commonly used for hems on trousers or jackets, for instance.
This foot is designed to help you accurately align your fabric, allowing you to create an invisible stitch on both sewing and overlock machines.
The blind hemming machine is a special machine for sewing a right side invisible stitch.
C
This is a finger in the throat plate around which the looper places the loops. These loops are then attached with one or two needles.
Tying off is called finishing the overlock seam or sewing out of the fabric into the void.
The closing seam is the seam that sews two pieces of fabric together.
This is a combination of two machines in one (overlock and cover). This machine is a good alternative to two machines. You need less space and you can do combination seams with this machine.
This is a seam combination of coverstitch and overlock stitch. The combination seam is often used to close and overlock a seam at the same time.
The cone is a large thread spool. It is useful for machines with high thread consumption.
This is also the name given to the seam that joins two or more pieces of fabric together.
It is also called an auxiliary looper. It closes the top looper and acts as an auxiliary looper for a two-thread seam.
It moves the fabric forwards or backwards between the presser foot and stitch plate and is located under the stitch plate.
This is a particularly soft thread for sewing and embroidery.
There are two different cover feet. The cover foot is fitted to the BLCS as standard. A cover foot can be purchased separately for the baby lock combination machines. The cover foot for the combination machines is narrower than the standard foot and is therefore more suitable for cover seams.
The cover hook is located at the bottom of the cover or coverlock machine. This hook places a loop under the fabric, which is then attached with one, two or three needle threads (depending on how many needles you want to use).
This is a hemming machine, without a knife, for elastic materials. However, the cover can also be used to sew pieces together with a chain stitch. The cover machine has a lower looper and up to three needle threads. So you can sew with one, two or three needles.
It protects the machine from dirt and impact.
The coverlock is a combined machine consisting of an overlock and cover machine.
This is a hem stitch with two or three parallel seam lines on the right side of the fabric. There is a loop on the underside, which creates a very elastic seam that is particularly suitable for jersey fabrics and also finishes the hem.
It is also called a hem guide or fabric guide and is used for better straight sewing when hemming.v
Shirring is the process of gathering the fabric to a desired length.
The crimping foot is a special foot and is not included in the scope of delivery. It can be purchased separately if required. The crimping foot can be used to join two layers of fabric so that one layer of fabric is crimped to the other. The advantage of the gathering foot is that it combines three operations in one: even gathering, serging and sewing.
Cuffs come in many different shapes and are used, for example, to finish off an item of clothing.
It cuts the bobbin thread or thread warp at the seam end.
Before a sewing project can be started, it must be cut to the correct size.
The raw edge is the edge of the fabric after cutting.
This is an underlay with a scale for cutting fabric with a rotary cutter. It also protects the table from the sharp blade of the rotary cutter.
This is the distance between the needle and the knife on overlock and coverlock machines, also known as the stitch width.
D
This is a decorative seam that is usually sewn with decorative thread. It decorates or enhances an item of clothing, for example.
This is the name given to seams that have a decorative effect as well as being practical.
It is a coverlock machine – a combination machine from Baby lock. The Desire can sew with a maximum of five threads.
This fabric feed can be used to stretch, hold and crimp fabrics.
It ensures accuracy when keeping distance from the fabric edge or for topstitching parallel seams.
This machine is used to double-fold and sew strips of fabric in a single operation. If, for example, a neckline is placed between the folded fabric strips during sewing, this neckline is finished with this double-folded strip and a beautiful final edge is created.
E
This is a 4-thread overlock machine with air-jet system from Baby lock. The Eclipsé was replaced some time ago by the successor model Enspire.
This is the name given to the process of sewing strips of fabric or tape around raw fabric edges to prevent them from fraying. However, the fabric edges can be finished with an overlock stitch (chain stitching).
This is a special foot for sewing on elastic, the elastic can be tensioned using a control on the top of the foot. The elastic foot is an optional extra.
This is the name of the felting machine from baby lock, it has 12 special needles with sharp barbs. This allows different fabrics, wool etc. to be joined together by felting, creating a beautiful effect. The machine also has a yarn and ribbon guide.
This is an auxiliary material in various forms for stabilising the fabric during various sewing operations. There is embroidery stabiliser that can be rinsed out after sewing.
An empty chain is created when sewing without fabric using an overlock or coverstitch.
This is the name of the 4-thread overlock machine with air-thrust system, ATD, wave seam from baby lock.
It is a 4-thread overlock machine with air puff system from baby lock. It does not have a thread take-up system, the thread tension is regulated manually.
This is an 8-thread coverlock machine with air jet system, ATD, wave seam from baby lock.
This is an 8-thread coverlock machine with air-jet system, ATD from baby lock. The Evolvé is no longer in production.
It extends the surface area, and gives support to larger projects.
F
Sometimes there is a fabric jam at the beginning of the seam; the fabric is not caught by the feed dog because it is not positioned correctly under the presser foot.
The felting machine is a special machine for needle felting.
Also known as a flatlock seam, this is a special overlock seam used to join fabrics together. The flatlock seam is usually only sewn with two threads, but is also possible with three threads. The advantage of a flat seam is that there is no seam allowance, which is a great advantage, especially for functional underwear. It is also a decorative seam that can be used on the left or right.

H
There is a handwheel on the right-hand side of every sewing, cover and overlock machine. When you turn it, you move the needle bar in or against the sewing direction. The handwheel makes it easier to support difficult sewing processes.
The hem is the final edge on fabrics.
The hem guide is a device that fixes the distance between the fabric edge and the seam to guide it straight.
J
The Jet Air System is baby Lock’s air blast system for threading the grippers.
K
The knee lever is used to raise and lower the sewing foot with the knee, giving you freedom of hand to move the sewing material.
There is a button on the overlock and coverlock machines from baby lock, when you press it, the blade is lowered and locks into place, it no longer moves and is thus deactivated.
Knitted fabric is usually a knitted fabric, similar to hand-knitted fabric. The only difference is that the stitches are much smaller. Knitwear is produced mechanically on large, fine knitting machines.
Warp knitted fabrics are fabrics produced industrially on a warp knitting machine.
L
The ladder stitch is a special seam created with the overlock. It is sewn with two threads as a flat seam.
This is a light-emitting diode with daylight-like, cold and glare-free light. LED light is significantly brighter than conventional electric light.
It equalises different fabric heights when topstitching.
Also known as sewing – the beginning and end of the seam are interlocked or sewn to protect them from unravelling.
It intertwines with the upper thread to form the seam.
This is the blade on the overlocker, which is fixed, unlike the upper blade, which is movable.
This is the lower looper in the overlock, making loops under the fabric when sewing.
It basically works in the same way as the upper thread tensioner. The thread lies between two metal discs. A tension spring is attached to these discs, which can be adjusted with a screw or a knob so that they exert more or less pressure on the discs, so that the thread moves tighter or looser through these discs.

The magnetic seam guide aids straight sewing. It is ‘clicked’ onto the stitch plate.
The instruction manual should always be available and is an important part of accurate stitching. Especially when buying a new baby lock, the manual is indispensable as it contains important instructions and user information.
This is a special thread wrapped with a shiny metallic fibre. It is very suitable for decorative seams.
This is the ‘grain’ of knitted fabric. It runs parallel to the long edges of the fabric.
N
This is a manual aid for removing and inserting the needles. At the same time, a brush for cleaning the machine is attached to the other end of this needle changer.
If a needle accidentally falls into the machine, baby lock has a catch tray. The needle then falls into this tray (drawer) and can simply be pulled out.
This is an aid for threading needles on sewing machines. There are manual and mechanical needle threaders.
O
In addition to the conventional threads for sealing a seam, there are countless decorative threads for adding accents to the project.
The Ovation is an 8-thread combination machine with jet air system, ATD, wave stitch, knee lift and speed control.
This is the standard foot of an overlock machine.
It is a special sewing machine with a knife. It overlocks fabric edges and/or sews together. It can also be used to create a variety of decorative seams, e.g. rolled hems or flat seams.
The overlock seam is a highly elastic seam with which particularly stretchy fabrics such as jersey or knitted fabrics can be sewn together particularly well.
P
This is a special foot for sewing in piping tape and for making piping tape.
This is a strong, hard-wearing sewing thread for sewing machines, overlock and cover stitch machines.
The presser foot is required to carry out sewing work. It is interchangeable. Normal sewing work is carried out with the standard presser foot. For special work, such as sewing on elastic or ruffling, there is a variety of so-called specialist feet.
On baby lock machines that do not have a motorised jet air threading system, there is a pump lever that pumps the air into the channel.

R
Rayon is a high-quality shiny machine embroidery thread. It breaks easily, so is better when added to a standard polyester thread for overlock and cover stitch machines.
2- or 3-thread narrow overlock stitch, used as an edge finish. When stretched during stitching, it creates a lettuce edge.
It is a 2- or 3-thread overlock seam, a very narrow seam for sewing thin fabrics together as an edge finish.

S
Filling stitch, stitches lying close together to form a smooth surface
A second line of stitching next to an overlocked edge. This is a strong seam, regularly used in industry, and can be reproduced in one pass on the baby lock range of combination machines.
A traditionally hand stitched way of decorating garments, originating in Japan. Baby lock are the only company who have created a machine capable of reproducing this stitch.
When cutting, you should bear in mind that the seam has a certain width. The part is therefore cut larger accordingly. This additional size or width is called seam allowance.
This is a very useful manual cutting tool with a sharp arrowhead.
The beading foot is also a special foot for sewing on sequins, beads, lead ribbon etc.
Also known as chain stitching – fabric edges are serged before or during joining to prevent them from unravelling.
The presser foot pressure can be adjusted, but is generally not necessary. It may only be necessary to increase or decrease the presser foot pressure slightly for particularly thick or thin fabrics.
The single hem is generally used on stretch fabrics, and is completed with a cover stitch. It simply folds the edge of the fabric before sewing, and cuts down on the bulk of a double hem.
This accessory is used for binding a fabric edge with cover stitch. A strip is sewn to the edge of the fabric. The single-fold bias binder folds the top side double and the bottom side single before sewing.
One or more elastic threads are sewn under a fabric and then pulled together. This gathering effect is also known as smocking, and can be achieved on either a sewing machine or a cover stitch machine.
It ensures accuracy when keeping distance from the fabric edge or for topstitching parallel seams.
These are optional accessories to facilitate or enable certain sewing tasks.

This is the length of each stitch, usually measured in mm.

The straight stitch is the basic seam used to sew fabric pieces together on a sewing machine.
The stitch width of the overlock can be adjusted using a rotary knob. In principle, the seam width is determined by inserting either the right-hand (narrow) or left-hand (wide) needle, which can also be set narrower or wider.
It is also known as a converter or auxiliary looper and when engaged closes the upper looper. This in turn is only closed if you want to sew a two-thread seam.
T
The tape guide is a tool designed for attaching tape while sewing. It is secured to the cover stitch table using two screws. Please note that the tape guide is not part of the standard delivery and must be purchased separately.
This is the name given to the extendable bar with thread guides on overlock, coverlock and coverlock machines.
A thread chain is formed on both the overlock and the cover stitch machine when stitching with no fabric under the foot. This thread chain, also known as a chain off, can also be used as a decorative chain.
The baby lock thread cutter is located at the front left of the machine and is similar to a sharp knife.

Threading is the process by which the machine is supplied with thread for the loopers and needles. There is a specific threading path and often – with the exception of baby lock – a threading sequence. The path and sequence are usually labelled on the machine.

U
The upper blade is the moving blade which trims the fabric edge during stitching on overlock and cover lock machines. This knife can be replaced.
This is the looper on overlock and cover lock machines, which travels up and over the needle plate to wrap it’s thread around the needles.
The upper thread is the needle thread that runs from the top of the sewing machine.
It is set manually or automatically for the needle thread. This depends on the nature of the fabric and the seam to be sewn.
W
This is a type of film and is often used to stabilise the seam on very thin fabrics.
Also known as a wave seam, this is a special decorative overlock stitch that can only be produced with certain baby lock machines.
This thread is an incredibly soft and highly elastic choice, specifically made for overlock machines. It performs exceptionally well for jersey pockets and decorative seams, like the baby lock Wave Stitch.
Woolly Lock is a specialist decorative stretch thread produced exclusively for baby lock. It is available in a variety of finishes and thicknesses, from baby lock dealers around the UK. Ideal for non chafe seams or for excellent coverage on a decorative seam.
These are appliqué scissors with a winged leg. They prevent unintentional cuts in the fabric. These scissors are very popular for trimming a hem sewn with the coverstitch machine. The winged scissors or appliqué scissors are an almost indispensable tool for the coverstitch machine.
